History

Founded in 1885 in Helena, Montana Territory by fifty male attorneys, bankers, mining, livestock and timber magnates, politicians, transportation titans, wholesalers and self-described capitalists, the Montana Club was the longest-continuously open private club between Minneapolis and Seattle until it reorganized as a co-operative association and opened to the public in June 2018 for à la carte dining, private dining, weddings, celebrations and business meetings. Designed by St Paul/New York City architect Cass Gilbert to replace the original private club destroyed in a fire, the Montana Club in downtown Helena is one of the state’s most significant architectural and cultural landmarks.

For nearly 140 years, the Club has offered authentic Montana hospitality in a variety of settings: from the majestic second floor dining room to the intimate wood-paneled Russell Room to the cozy Rathskeller and the Banquet Hall with panoramic views of downtown and Mount Helena.

Present

The Original Montana Club endures as one of Helena’s most storied institutions, gracefully evolving within the iconic Cass Gilbert building—a setting where history is not merely preserved, but lived.

Today, the Club unfolds across a collection of distinct experiences open to the public. The Rathskeller offers an intimate, atmospheric retreat for cocktails and conversation beneath the city in a cellar bar. Above, the Garden Room presents a refined expression of daytime elegance, while 1885 Restaurant defines the Club’s modern culinary identity—where craftsmanship, seasonality, and quiet sophistication converge.

At its heart, the second-floor Club remains a private, members-only sanctuary—reserved for those who value discretion, connection, and a sense of belonging shaped over time. Yet, in keeping with its legacy as a gathering place, these storied spaces may also be opened for select private occasions. From weddings to celebrations of significance, guests are invited to experience the rare privilege of hosting within a setting defined by heritage and understated grandeur.

Balancing reverence for its past with a confident vision forward, The Original Montana Club stands as more than a destination—it is an enduring expression of place, where timeless tradition meets modern refinement, and every visit becomes part of a larger story still being written.
