The Oval Room

Tucked into the sixth floor of The Original Montana Club, the Oval Room is one of Helena's most storied private spaces — a room where more than a century of history is still set at the table.

When fire destroyed the original clubhouse in 1903, the club turned to renowned architect Cass Gilbert — the mind behind the U.S. Supreme Court Building, the Woolworth Building, and the Minnesota State Capitol — to design its replacement. The new six-story Beaux-Arts clubhouse opened in June 1905, and the Oval Room has anchored its top floor ever since. Rendered in graceful Classical Revival style, the room looks out over downtown Helena and has hosted generations of celebrations, dinners, and gatherings among the city's most prominent company.

What makes the Oval Room rare is that so much of its original character remains intact. The original chairs, table, and chandelier still furnish the space today, lending every dinner the warmth and authenticity of the club's earliest days. Few rooms in Montana allow guests to dine surrounded by the very furnishings that have witnessed more than a hundred years of the state's history.
